Whats our perfect bike setup for Ultra Cycling and Bike Packing?

With the rise of races like the Transcontinental, Transatlanticway and BikingMAN series, we’re getting more and more enquiries about the perfect bike and setup for such events - or your own non-racing multi-day bike adventures.
We take a look at one of our teams bikes as he heads out for a 600km London-Paris-London adventure across northern France. Firstly, a bit about the logistics for this particular ride. We’d be staying on the Ferry night one, and B&B’s for the other nights, so no divvy or tent was required - but we’ve used the same setup when bike packing with the addition on a handlebar pack for extra storage sleeping gear.
One this kind of distance, comfort on the bike is an absolute premium consideration so we’ve kitted the bike with equipment suited on the key contact points. Saddles are of course very personal, but we find although the Brooks Cambium looks hard, its built in flex is perfectly designed for longer rides and the carved contact point helps the nether region, 3.2m Lizard Skin bar is uber comfortable too.
Contact with the road also has speed and comfort in mind, in this case handled by the Compass BonPass 35mm Tyres, they’re the fastest tyre that compass make with some science-backed testing to prove, we really rate them for speed and comfort, we’ve even heard one of our team say h’d never run smaller than 35mm ever again…!
Maybe we’re a little spoiled in the staff team that we have some stock of wheel sets, but we’re running the Hunt 50 Carbon rear for some aero and weight advantage along with the Dynamo 4Season at the front to provide that valuable power source needed for long rides that may run into the evening or through the night. The dynamo matches perfectly with the B&M Luxos light that has a built in USB charging interface - we’re blown away with the ability to charge a USB battery all-day and never have to worry about loss of battery on mobile phone, Wahoo bike GPS and/or lights.
We have plenty of room for change of cycling clothes, evening clothes, bike spares and tools in the restrap bags, and love the pouch for food on the go on the top tube.
All-in-all we think its a setup that is perfectly suited to ultra-cycling, bike packing or cycle touring. Let us know what you think in the comments….
